Bike 'n Hike - 13th September

Saturday 13th September 2008 is the date this year of the sponsored "Bike 'n Hike" event organised by the Beds & Herts Historic Churches Trust. This is the annual fund-raising event for the Trust, which gives grants for repairing churches and chapels in the two counties.

The event organisers are hoping that the 2008 event will be even more successful than last year's, when just over £100,000 was raised. Since the event started in 1991, over £1 million has been raised, enabling the Trust to help hundreds of churches with their repair bills.

How the "Bike 'n Hike" works

1. The organiser for your local church will supply you with a list of all the participating churches in Beds and Herts (over 150 in Hertfordshire alone), and a sponsorship form.

2. Plan your route. You can start and finish anywhere you like, at any time you like between 10 am and 6 pm. Many people go round the churches in their town or local area, and some are more ambitious, with 70 or more churches being just possible in the 8 hours available.

3. Get people to sponsor you.

4. On the day, you "sign in" at each church, putting your name on the list kept there. A helper at the church will sign your sponsorship form. Many churches provide drinks and biscuits, and some even provide lunches and teas.

5. Collect your sponsorship money and send it off to your local church organiser. Your local church will receive half the sponsorship money, the other half going to the Trust, who then distribute it in grants.

Who takes part in the "Bike 'n Hike"?

Last year 644 cyclists or walkers took part in Hertfordshire, 150 of them in the Hemel / Berkhamsted / Tring area alone. All sorts of people take part, individuals, families and groups, young and old, mostly on bikes, but some on foot.
